My husband is in Norway and called me yesterday to say his hand is extremely sore and the veins have gone black around the base of his thumb. It's so painful he can hardly move it. Straight away I thought of DVT and have told him to go and see a doctor but he refused. I have been worried sick all night then he finally texted this morning saying he'll go and get it looked at when he gets home on Saturday. I am obviously not getting through to him that it could be a DVT-he thinks you only get them after a long haul flight (!) He's digging his heels in because he says if it is a DVT they will stop him flying and he'll lose his job. I can only suggest keeping it mobile and keeping hydrated but would be very grateful for any advice-even though I am sure you will all agree that he needs to see someone urgently. Thanks.

Almost certainly NOT a DVT...Deep Vein thrombosis.

Sounds more like gout to me.

See his GP.

Ohhh Sqad....I have just breathed the most massive sigh of relief! He has had Gout before, in his foot, and actually mentioned that he felt a twinge last week. Thanks so much :-)
No problem. To tide him over...I would suggest Ibuprofen 600mgms twice daily ( on the Continent one can get 600mgm tablets, but not in the UK)
