Why is it that after awaking from a short nap, I am left with an unpleasant taste in my mouth. This can be after as little as an hour, yet in the morning after a long sleep, there is no such unpleasant taste?

I get the same thing! When im on an early shift i often fall asleep in the afternoon and wake up like this. Its a horrible taste, i can only describe as a dry taste even though my mouth isn't dry. When i wake up i never know what time it is or where i am! I dont know why!

If I fall asleep at the wrong time I too get 'the taste'. It is the only time I ever crave a cup of tea. After 2-3 cups my mouth feels fine again. Brushing my teeth doesn't have the same effect. Curious no?
I drool if I have a lunchtime nap, especially in a library. It feels really strange when you wake up..kind of mellow, fuzzy.

I get a real sugar craving after waking from a nap- what's that about??!

I know what you mean about the taste, if I have a little nap then I get it (especially if I fall asleep on the sofa during a ffilm or something) but after a proper long sleep I don't get it.  Also, sometimes my teeth hurt after waking from a little nap.

Like nfn says though, a few cups of teas and you're right as rain again!

When i nap during the day, i tend to do so with my mouth open, and my saliva dries in my mouth, making me have an awful taste. Just before i wake, i the saliva starts coming again and i wake up with a moist mouth.

Strangely however, at night, for a reason unknown to me, my mouth is closed when i sleep.

doc_steve is correct! When you sleep with your mouth open the air gets in and dries the saliva out in your mouth hence the dry mouth scenario. Also if you are have a nap after eating there is a chance  that stomach acid is being forced back up in to Your mouth. Believe me there are not many things that taste worse.
