My friend's husband has been diagnosed with hypertension since last January. The husband was a paramedic and a great one too. Is hypertension serious and would you be off work for a year. When I talked to my friend she became furtive and wanted to change the conversation that when I got home I thought he had the Big C. Thanks for any answers. Called up to day friend out for a walk but husband was there but has lost weight by exercising and says he misses work.

Untreated it may well be a killer, but treated with drugs, then a normal lifespan should be anticipated.

I cannot understand why one would be off work for a year with hypertension.
Hypertension is High blood pressure. There are many forms of treatment that very quickly bring this under control. No reason at all why he would be off work for a year unless theres something else happening as well. Being overweight can increase BP so losing weight is often recommended by GPs.
