We are trying to stop using butter but have been told that all margarines/spreads are full of rubbish. We have fairly high cholesterol. Which is the best to use ?? Thanks all

For God's sake......USE butter.............spread thinly.
Why not use olive oil as it's much healthier and for those moments when only a spread will do i've heard good things about benecol spread. :)
Olivio olive oil spread is delicious and supposed to be very low in all the bad stuff. You can cook with it as well, which is a bonus, as a lot of these spreads can't be used for cooking.
I'd tend to agree with Sqad although I'm not sure how the deity would benefit. :)
I was having problems with high colesterol, and my nhs well man nurse told me about Lurpak Lightest, very tasty and good for colesterol, a little expensive but you get the best of both worlds, I also agree with squad spread a little thinner, my colesterol has gone down by the way but I have changed my diet with exercise good luck
Listen to the venerable sqad - use butter, spread thinly and/or don't use as often.

Lurpak spreadable (not the 'light' version which is horrid) is a good option - approx 75% butter 25% veg oil and no nasty additives - has actually reduced my butter usage by about a third because it is easy to use in small quantities direct from the fridge.
Apologies to magicmick - his post wasn't there when I started typing and my comments may have sounded rather rude.

Obviously Lurpak Light is entirely a matter of personal taste - works for some people not others.
Sunny dave there is a lurpak light but now also a lurpak lightest, I have never had light but lightest is far from horrid very tasty
Not seen the 'lightest' - may be worth a try then - thanks MM
"but have been told that all margarines/spreads"

I challenge you to go and buy any margarine in UK shops.
Ok sunnydave no probs, did my second post before yours you are right personal taste is everything really and I should have said spreadable, never tried that
Get one of those ones that have plant sterols.

EG Flora Procative or Benecol

Chuck is right about not being able to buy margarine in the UK any more.

Stephen Fry said so on QI, so it must be true.
