I have been thinking about going on the Atkins diet.... has anyone been on it? Did it work for you? What are the Pros and Cons?

I have done Atkins and it worked very well for me. I lost 24 lbs and have only gained back 6. This in the face of menopause weight gain! I found it quite an extreme way to live in its induction stage and more difficult to stick to in cold weather. It did work miracles on my bouncing blood sugar, headaches, cravings etc. I will probably do it again when(if) the weather warms up. Didn't get the bad breath, did have to make sure that I got enough water and fibre if you egt my drift.

I retained some good habits from it. My sugar consumptoon is way down and my water consumption is way up!

My husband has type 2 diabetes and cutting back drastically on carbs has certainly helped him. His blood sugar is a lot more stable, and as a result we have both lost weight. We have adapted the Atkins diet to suit us and it certainly works for us(been doing it for 2 years now, and haven't gained the weight back). We don't eat anything white e.g bread, pasta, or rice, and eat plenty of vegetables and certain fruits, mostly berry types. Fish, Chicken, Turkey the occaisional Steak. This is a way of life for us and we like it.

My husband lost almost 50 lbs on Atkins.  In addition, during our annual checkup, the doctor (not knowing how he lost the weight) commented that this was the best his blood work had been in 10 years - his cholesterol was way down, blood sugar was good, etc.

I couldn't stay on Atkins because I missed things like pasta too much.

It does work well for people who can tolerate it . some members of my family felt very unwell on it and had to stop. we found it better to eat fruit and veg and protein, Not just veg and protein. Also the addition of no more than one very small portion of starch in any one day, if desired,  did not stop the weight loss.

Excellent - thanks for that.....

did anyone have any side effects with their hair?? I have heard that the hair can become brittle and fall out... has anyone heard of this or experienced it??

Also, I haven't heard anything about taking vitamins - can you do this while on Atkins??

Thanks for the responses so far - I just want to know as much as possible before embarking on this particular diet!! :-)

Marvin, if nobody responds( I don't know the answer) , to your last questions, I would suggest you post it again as a new question so that people will see it.
hope you do well.   Actually I think I did see someone on TV who was taking supplements with the diet.
