how can this happen?

my friend was telling me about how her brothers friends sister, became quite seriously brain damaged after simply cutting herself on a tin of dogfood

she is apparently shakes constantly, her eyes roll, and she cannot speak or feed herself etc and she will never recover.

how can this be? is it perhaps something to do with CJD? could it happen that easily? its not like she ate the dog food

or is it that it was direct blood contamination that caused it?

she does not know the full details but i 100% believe her (she was telling me about her own brothers death at the time, so it wasnt any sort of made up gossip etc)

thanks

"My friend's brother's friend's sister..."

I feel a joke coming on here.
Maybe she suffered blood poisoning from cutting her hand and getting it infected... Septasemia can cause brain damage. I don't know how possible it is. But it could make sense.
This must be exceedingly rare and a form of food poisoning causing encephalitis or meningitis by either bacteria or virus.

Never seen or heard of a case

i suggested that maybe the wound got infected but she said no, the wound itself was not the problem

thanks all
It would be interesting to know the exact reason for it. Makes one even more wary of the washing the recycling garbage practice we're encouraged to do these days. Some of the tins can be very sharp.
perhaps guillan-barre syndrome (not quite sure of spelling?)
all/any infections can affect the brain!

i don't need any incentive not to wash up ...
bednobs......I can,t think of a better cause as Guillain -Barre often follows infections.
when i was a student i looked after someone with gbs - he made a sort of recovery but it took months for him to even walk again.

there was no infection in her finger. it happened quite fast.
There may have been no VISUAL infection in her finger, but the brain damage was done by toxins rather than the organism.
