If you take on a new flat mate from a different country that isn;t working do you think it's a good idea not to let her have access to your mail, or do you think that;s over reacting?

Your mail is yours and yours alone.
Wouldn't you take the same precations no matter what country they come from?
Are you saying she opens your mail?

oh no trt, i have a post box outside the flat and i'm just wondering if people think i'm over reacting not letting her have a key to it, i don;t think i am but she seems to think i am, and yes mmmmm i would like to take the same precations with eveyine, but again i thought i'd be over reacting
Paranoid perhaps.
I think you're possibly unsuited to renting rooms out generally to be honest, as you seem to be pretty suspicious, having issues with the girl who allegedly smokes outside of the house and now someone who you think might attempt to impersonate you and defraud you. I'd be very surprised if the second one stays after you've pretty much told her that you think she might be a dishonest thief- I know I certainly wouldn't.

Welcome to AB, fress. Your post reminds me of ristian. Are you from outside the UK?
is it a joint mail box?
If it is then surely she should have a key?
if her post comes there too, she should have access - after all YOU could be stealing HER identity
If you have such issues then why let her move in? I'm thinking pretty much the same as Nox.

I'd be very unhappy if I couldn't have access to my post at my convenience and someone else essentially had control over when or even whether I could get my post.

What if you go away or are unable to get to the box in an emergency like being in hospital or a family emergency? What if she is waiting for something urgent? Does she then have to wait until you come back to get your post?
Yes, you are over-reacting.
I don't know, but I'd be very surprised if you had a legal right to deny her access to her own mail.
You could always have all your mail held at the post office for you to pick up and she could continue to have hers delivered. There would be no need for you to lock the mail box at all then.
As NOX said though, you don't seem suited to renting out rooms to anyone with your overly cautious (paranoid) ways.

Agree with noxxy and others, you sound like the flat mate from hell to be brutally honest.
If you are worried about her stealing your mail how are you happy to share your house with her? Haven't you see Single White Female?

What's all that about? Translation software?

Share the ruddy box .. until she gives you good reason not to!!
It works both ways .. You could pinch her DSS payments : )
If you come in late from work .. one evening ..
and the room smells of cigarette smoke .. your laptop is gone and your Garmin is missing .. there is hair dye in the bath, blood on the new shower curtain and it's half off the rail .. You pop back to work to check for your laptop, and there is a girl with nice chocolate brown recently-dyed hair sitting there at your desk playing your favourite mp3's .. she asks .. "Who are you?"

THEN start worrying ; )
