What is stored on a SIM card and what is stored on the phone itself?

I've just got a new smartphone. Unfortunately, my SIM card is quite old and won't work in the phone. I've spoken to my provider who said they would send me a new SIM card. I haven't asked them to do this yet as I need to make sure I don't lose anything stored in my old phone. Apparently as soon as they process the order for the new SIM my old one will stop working (I assume its cos I can't have 2 SIMS on one contract). So far I I have transferrred all my phone numbers to the memory card in my old phone which i assume I can put in my new phone. What else is stored on the SIM rather than the phone? Or does it depend on what phone I've got? Its a Nokia 6700 Classic at the mo and I'm going to a HTC Desire. I don't want to lose any info. Thanks

Can't you back up your SIM onto the computer? most phones do that, my Sony Ericcson certainly does. You can then transfer the numbers back down onto the HTC when it comes.
If you've bought it in a shop, they should be able to transfer everything for you.
