i have 2 total hip replacements. If they have a special name, i'm afraid i don't know what it is. Uncemented, both of them
My husband has had 2 hip resurfaces + 1 hip replacement (one of the resurfaces fractured after 8 months!!)
Bilateral Charnley cemented prosthesis....one 25years ago, the other one 20 years ago, no problem with either and they are still going strong.

If you are contemplating one..... pick your surgeon and pick the hospital carefully.

you had one done recently didn't you bednobs? is it all fine now?
i have two birmingham (resurfaced) hips, one 7 and one 8 years old, having a bit of bother with one and a few investigations. was just wondering if anyone else is resurfaced.

how old are your husbands roslyn?

without being so bold as to ask your age, you must have been quite young - in hip replacement terms - when you had them done sqad. i was told numerous times when i was having investigations to see what was causing my initial hip pain 10 years ago, that i was very young and that's one of the reasons (probably the main one) i had resurfaced hips - bone conservation and large ball and socket making dislocation less likely in a very active person.
i'm hoping it's not the implants failing, x-rays don't show anything, an mri scan is being organised and have today had blood taken to check for abnormal metal (chromium i think) levels. birminghams are relatively new so they don't have the same history your charnley ones do sqad (well, you'll already know that). thanks for that link doctor dear :o)
hi yes, i had it done in October - all fine and dandy now thanks :) I don't think they offer resurfacing anymore, do they?
I believe askyourgran has - you may want to keep an eye open for her later on
Eth....both done in my 50´s played a lot of sport.....had pain i hip as a child diagnosed as "growing pains" on looking back, it was Perthes Disease which was missed.

The Birmingham set up and resurfacing is new, but my mates who were trained by the late Sir John Charnley did the operation for me. I would only have a cemented hip with a Charnley Prosthesis.....may be thought as old fashioned by some, but 25years trouble free says it all.

i think they do, bednobs. your existing bone needs to be in pretty good nick to have one though. no good if someone has lived with the pain for too long and the bone has worn away too much.
thanks ttfn, will do so (like your alternative carols by the way, i see you kept them 'clean' )

don't really fancy having another hip op but if needs must. and you're living and breathing and pixilating proof that traditional, full, hip replacements wear well.
will just have to wait and see what results these tests show. it may be that intense physio is all that's needed - fingers crossed!
My husband is now 55 - he had the first hip resurface July 07, the other hip resurfaced July 09 and the hip replacement 8 months later on the most recent resurface.
He has medical insurance through work so was lucky to have the 2 resurfaces done privately. The hip replacement was an emergency which he had at The Royal Derby.
