If these are not treated - what would be the long-term medical consequences? They can survive years & years, and are not always visible or obvious. Could worms, of whatever sort, if not treated, lead to a serious medical condition?

salla my darling ........far too many complications form minor itching, malabsorption of vitamins and brain abscesses.

Google them at your leisure.

Could it account for a breakdown in the immune system - numerous food allergies & other allergies, high IgE levels, chronic eczema, IBS-type symptoms & diarrhoea?
salla.......it COULD be, but is it established that the patient has indeed worm infestation?

vibra...LOL seems a busy clinic.

Not at all. It's just something she has read on the internet and frightened herself witless about, as she apparently had worms around the age of 16 (one episode only) and was too embarrassed to tell anyone. I told her it was a silly thought, but.....
salla....come on, spit it out........give us the whole story.

your bum?
Question Author
Ok,(and vibra, please this is serious and it's about my girl, so no jokes). I am seriously worried about her.

To be brief: history of eczema (initially seasonal) and IBS since her mid-teens. This has developed gradually into a very severe chronic all year round eczema and progressively worsening and lengthening list of food allergies - to lactose and dairy mostly. Also dyes, cosmetics... She is in a state.

She is seeing a Professor of Immunology on Wednesday privately, because the NHS & her GPs continue to let her down & have been pretty damn useless. Her immune system seems to be going haywire. She reacts to loads of things now - she now has to carry an Epipen and at the xmas party at the weekend she reacted to some food and her throat started closing up & swelling, despite avoiding everything she has been advised to.

She has diarrhoea almost all the time.

Something serious is going on, it's getting worse, and I am at a loss to know what to do to help her. She will become depressed soon, if she's not already.

She is now worrying that due to a bout of worms that went unreported in her late teens, her intestines are being eaten away from the inside. It sounds funny, silly, but I said I would find out for her what I can. She is desperate to get some treatment for what is becoming, I think, a serious immunological and allergy problem.

aww sorry to hear this salls, hope she get gets it sorted x
salla... i would consider it highly unlikely that the worm problem in her teens has anything to do with her problem. Yes it is possible to get reinfected and this is usually due to poor hygiene, washing your hands after going to the toilet etc.
Reassure her that if her intestines are not being eaten away by worms and I would be interested to now the opinion that you are given on Wednesday.

Will do sqad. I just had to ask about the worm thing, cos she'd got herself all worried about it.

Poor kid (she's 26....), so beautiful and bubbly normally - but for over a year now she has been covered with eczema on face & body - all year round, not just in the winter months. Her eyes & swollen and bleeding & sore. Sometimes her wounds become infected when she itches & bleeds. Her sinues are constantly blocked. She has diarrhoea daily. She seems to be developing new allergies on a weekly basis - she is reacting to vegetables now, which she has always been ok with before. She's stopped using hair dyes, only uses organic cosmetics.

Typical mother's guilt - I have been wondering if it something I did when pregnant, or when she was little. But she only devloped these problems in her mid-teens. They were mild & controllable before, now they are taking over her life and affecting her quality of life. If I could take her place, I would.
salla...please dont blame yourself......there is nothing either of you did that could have precipitated such a state of affairs.

I presume that she has seen a Consultant Dermatologist and also Gastro-Enterologist?
Question Author
She's been seeing dermatologists for years - all they tell her is what she already knows - that it is eczema.... Yay, that's news.
She has tried all manner of pills, potions, creams, steroids etc. Some antihistamines she cannot take because they contain Lactose. None have given her any real relief. She has tried herbal remedies, seen Chinese doctors, homeopaths you name it. Now she's having to spend £150 for a private consultation because the GPs don't seem too bothered about getting her sorted out other than throwing more creams & antibiotics at her.

She's never been fully investigated by a gastroenterologist - they have just diagnosed IBS from her description of symptoms. And because it's 'bottom-related' she has been too embarrassed to insist on invasive investigations.

She has had the rudimentary complement of allergy tests - pinprick, patch testing, RAST etc. She needs more intensive invxs now I think, by someone who knows what he is doing. I just hope to God there is something he can do to help her. There is nothing worse than your children suffering...... :-(
salla...what was the result of the RAST?
Question Author
I don't know off-hand, Years ago she only showed a reaction to eggs - now she's showing positive towards lactose & dairy, wheat.... I can't remember any stats.

As a child she ate everything & anything. No reactions. I feel guilty because her problems started in her late teens, as I & her stepfather were going through that awful domestic period, with the drinking & the violence. She was probably far more stressed & affected by it all than I ever realised. I know that's just a 'mum' thing.

She is such a beautiful girl sqad, inside & out, and it pains me to see her so upset.
salla....I understand that.....keep me informed.
Oh dear Salla. As one who has over the years been subject to all sorts of allergies and allergy related complaints I know just how your daughter must feel. I hope she gets somewhere with the tests. One things I will say though is that in my case stress and worry make all the symptoms so much worse. Easy to say and not easy to feel relaxed when this is happening.

Your question made me wonder if I perhaps have worms! ;o)
