6 months ago i had an operation in both of my hands for carpul tunnel, (which hasn't been a success) and in january this year x-rays to my thumbs and wrists have showed that i have severe osteoarthritis in both of my hands, i have been told about an operation that can be done but i am very reluctant to have this as the previous one hasn't worked, i am in constant pain and have been prescribed tramadol for this, but i wondered if there is anyone out there undergoing a similar situation, any advice would be appreciated,

Can't speak from persoinal experience BUT:

Make sure that you go to an Orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in hand surgery.

Either ask your GP or Google "Hand Surgeons"
Not quite your situation, but I had an op for carpel tunnel a while back. It seemed at first to be alright, then I started getting pains in my hands. I have just been diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis, I am now on Methotexate and Folic acid. I still have pain in my hands and am very stiff in my arms and hands in the morning.

If I were you I would consult your doctor, let him know your concerns, he will advise you what's best.

This is a good website about arthritis, you could contact them and ask advice too.

I wish you well whatever you do, and I hope for a pain free future.
