hubby broke his leg in feb this year and had a external fixator on for about 4months.fixator is off now and a cast in place but nothing is healing he has been booked for emergency op in september but its driving both him and myself nuts.does anyone have any clues on how long healing can take place after surgery which he has been told he will have to have bones joined and a bone graft.when asking doctors if any chance of op being brought forward the answer was.you cant hurry these things.i'm not being ungrateful but hubby is normally a very active person.any ideas on things he can do to keep mind occupied.he is sick of jigsaws and doesnt really have any interest in computers.maybe someone else out there is experiencing the same.by the way a half ton girder fell on his leg and not anyones fault so can't even claim compo.

RESCUE REMEDY advised.Good news, now looks like healing has started??.may not need op after all. That is a big MAY NOT.But i am being positive about it as advised and hopefully hubby can be more positive. He is very depressed and been advised to take rescue remedy.Does anyone else take this and what do they think.
I am really sorry but I had to laugh. Rescue remedy, do you swallow it or rub it on.? Do you need a cauldron too?
Seriously, from personal experience my leg took ages to start to knit together and when it did start it was slow but steady progress.
I am not surprised your husband felt frustrated and down, it feels like there is no end to it and that it has lasted forever.
Reassure your husband that like mine it will improve but in its own time. though not medically trained or advised I decided to help the healing process by taking a multi vitamin tablet and a calcium tablet. I have no idea if it worked physically but I at least felt that I was doing something active to help the healing process.
If Resue Remedy works on that level,go for it. At least I am not aware of any adverse effects from taking it.
Have any of the activities suggested before helped or is he still climbing the walls?
Question Author
still climbing walls bless him and like you taking all the vitamins he can including calcium vitamin d.a-z multivitamins.cod liver oil.milk etc etc.he has been painting our shed over last few days.as you know all is limited.and of course he is very stubborn so he like to think that his ideas are best so i have be a little careful in how i suggest things.he loves footy and season starts this week but has already stated he does not want to go unless its under his own steam.ie he does not want anyone to drive him there.so it is diifficult.
Silly man. if he went to the footie could he not get a ring side seat if he was using a wheelchair, albeit temporarily.like your hubby, I was threatened with surgery but the orthodeadic doc decided to let nature take its course, which it did of course but took longer than anticipated.Part of the frustration is expecting it all be done and duted in 6>8 weeks, which everyone else says is their experience.Lordy, he must be desperate if he is painting the shed.
I hired a wheelchair frof the Redx, which was a godsend as I could get out and about with someone pushing of course.
Pt 2. I could go shopping and even went to the pub a couple of times. With a bit of forward planning I was able to feel like a member of the human race again. Would he be willing to think about something like that?
Generalisation I know but men are terrible patients and it must be areal trial for you.
Question Author
he is managing to go up pub on crutches so it could be a lot worse eh
Yes thats good, a bit of male company and a change of scene.
Though it sounds like an eternity it will pass.
QED I am just off to take the dog for a walk. lol
Let us know how you get on and good luck.!!!!
I had an external fixator too, after having my leg lengthened. Mine didn't heal either - I waited nine months to no avail - so five months actually doesn't sound too bad to me! Eventually I had a bone graft from my pelvis and a metal plate inserted to hold it all together, as you describe. It was a big op and I was really ill afterwards, the worst I've ever been (and I've had a lot of surgery). I was on crutches for just over two years in total. My heart goes out to your husband - I know exactly what he's going thru!
Question Author
thank you for your story.i do hope you are well now..hubby has to go and have an xray a few days b4 op just to see if continuing to mend.hopefully now its started it may continue now that his smoking has stopped .
Question Author
hi me again original surgeon want second opinion the day before his op so sent to another hospital but hubby does feel that this consultant is a bit more knowledgeable.our life in docs hands we have to trust.has been encourage to walk more on the broken leg and go back in 6 weeeks.my fingers and everything is crossed for him.the consultant tried to move the leg where it is broken and has come to the conclusion that because hubby did not scream it must mean that its knitting together?????????I HOPE SO.sounds a bit sadistic to me.
