I thought that the idea was to continue taking it. It is a preventative medicine.

I was on it a couple of years ago and my doc changed it for a different type of medication.
I simply stopped it and started the new one.
Not a problem.

Been taking it for 6 yrs now following Heart Valve Replacement, no Heart Attack just a kn***ered valve. Have read about various side effects, but have had no problems myself, so no intention of stopping it.
I take Amlodipine and two other HBP tabs. I have had no major problems.
Taking Amlidopine, Bisoprolol Fumerate and Ramipril. Hate the *** but its better than a burst aortic artery. Another two CT scans and then try cutting back.
Can I ask why you are asking?

Woofgang, -what actually occurred was that I had ran out of tabs, phoned & ordered new prescription. Three days had passed before I collected these & I self monitored my BP which amazingly appeared to be falling- 135/70, 132/68 and I thought why am I on Amlodipine ? So I waited another day while monitoring and tonight it spiked at 166/73 and one or two mins later it dropped to 143/70 -Both these readings were done after a meal. I really wanted to see for myself whether this drug actually is effective for me. The other factor is that over the recent months, my weight has increased, which would normally cause an increase in BP so why would it fall?
I take Amlodipine, have done for a while for high blood pressure. I shall just keep on taking it, I have had no problems.
it would probably be best to speak to your gp before stopping it as it does take a few days for your body to be clear when you stop this type of medication.i was on 10mg but was taken off it and put on another one but the side affects remained for at least 2 weeks after i changed to the new one.
What a sensible attitude to your medical condition and i do wonder how many people are taking drugs unnecessarily, particularly drugs that control high blood pressure.
I know little about your medical history or family history but being just on Amlodipine would indicate that your hypertension is not severe.
However.....a couple of your readings that you have given, the top one (systolic) is a little, shall we say, going in the wrong direction. a little high, so this must be taken into consideration.
There is no harm in continuing to monitor your BP, a good idea, but before you change your medication in any way,I would suggest that you check with your GP.

Thanks to all ABrs for your very sound advice....I will monitor BP for another couple of days & watch for spikes or more consistent 'highs' -if any occur I will take amlodipine and ask my GP on the next visit.
I found it quite re-assuring to hear of a 95yrs person still taking a drug such as this.
Again many thanks....
