My MIL has been told by her GP that test strips for her blood sugar monitor are no longer available free on prescription, and will cost her £30 for fifty strips. Can anybody confirm this? She is in her late eighties. Many thanks

I'm type 2 and buy them from Amazon. Much cheaper than £30 for 50. In the UK, all people with type 1 diabetes, or otherwise on insulin, should qualify for test strips free on prescription. People with other types of diabetes, or on other treatments, may also be given test strips on prescription but this will be judged on an individual basis....

Is she type 1 or 2?

Type 2
as HC says, it would normally depend if she was type onr or type 2 diabetic. If type 2, they much prefer to use the HBA1C tests to determine control
then yes - im frankly amazed she's been able to get them this long

Thank you all for your swift responses. I guess a swift trawl on t'internet is our best bet.
If she is stable and has a HbA1c blood test every six months ago she doesn't need to test herself every day.
