Following a dash to A&E after coughing up a lot of blood, have had an x-ray which apparently shows a spot at the very top of a lung. Now awaiting CT scan in a couple of days. I appreciate I need to wait for this and then to have medical advice, but does anyone know of any possible reasons other than lung cancer? I forgot to ask the doctor in the Assessment Ward.

I can't answer your question I'm afraid, but I send you best wishes. I hope that the test shows it is not what you fear.
Well, let us assume that the "spot on the lung" is an accurate description of the chest X-Ray and is not just a "one off comment.

50 years ago, the "odds on favourite would have been Tuberculosis and is still a possibility today.

The other possibilities are lung abscess, bronchitis congenital cyst.

Need top know more about you...occupation, smoker and any other underlying conditions.
Just like to make a general comment............a lung cancer, primary or secondary is very unlikely to be " a spot on the very top of the lung."

It is usually anywhere on the X-Ray.....other than "the very top."

Thank you all for your answers. Will now await the scans etc but it is encouraging to know that there are other possibilities. We are away from our home address, so are without access to our own GP for advice.
