Afternoon,

If you missed it, some kind soul has put up Will Self's documentary "The Prozac Economy" on YouTube.

(It's a radio doc, so why not leave it on in the background?)

They get to a point where they ask this question:

"Does anyone have the right to be happy?"

Were you taught you should be "happy" - as if that's the status quo?

If so, is it something that has done more damage than good?

The documentary is of interest in it's own right even if you want to ignore those questions! :)

I once listened to an interesting debate about happiness. It basically concluded that happiness is not a constant state of being, for anyone. Happiness is brief moments like a great view, a nice glass of wine, seeing a close friend etc etc. I firmly believe this.
even in the US constitution people only have the right to the pursuit of happiness....no guarantee that you will catch it.
Speaking sociologically though, for a civilisation to survive and flourish, its participants have to be sufficiently happy with it to support the status quo BUT sufficiently unhappy with it to want to change and improve it.
