My husband has lost half a stone in a week due to not being able to swallow foods. For example, he's only had 505 calories today. He can only manage scrambled egg (only with a drink and that can be a struggle), soup, tiramisu, skips, yoghurts, smoothies, mash potato (but only if it has sauce over it).

He is losing his appetite and is scared to eat things as he's choking on them. We are really struggling to think of foods he could eat? What foods blend well?

He's having a barium swallow today and waiting for a SALT assessment. Thank you.

Peanut butter has lots of protein and calories. How about making a satay based soup or stew?
Failing that, just blend something he likes and see if that works.
Any vegetable soup that includes lentils and then blended would be a good source of vitamins and protein. Hummos is high in protein and easy to eat too.
Most veg will puree well.

What about a tomato sauce (there are loads of variations on a theme you can do) over some mashed spuds with cream and herbs in?

Bolognaise or chilli will puree quite well.

I know this is a horrible thing to suggest, but what about baby food? (Please don't take offence). Or there is a little information here http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/FS/FS16800.pdf

I have to admit, for a cheap and readily available meal the other night I had a bowl of microwave mash with a blob of frozen spinach in, gravy left over from a lamb dinner and mint sauce.
It was delicious.
Leek and potato soup is lush and full of goodness.

Thanks for these ideas, he doesn't like the sound of the satay thing though.

Funnily enough Barmaid, we went down the baby aisle in Asda yesterday for ideas. We're really struggling to think of things, he doesn't like porridge and he's worried about how weetabix will go down. He's worried it'll catch in his throat. Breakfast ideas are the hardest.
For breakfast, fruit smoothie, followed by yoghurt? Could you soak a weetabix in hot milk so it goes really soggy? (That's the only way I like them).

He had half a carton of the Convent Garden Leek and Potato soup for his tea (and had it blended) but it's only 108 calories. He does like soups but we have to be careful with tomato based foods as they can make him violently sick.

Tcup of lentils with water to half inch above & pinch of salt. Place in microwave for 5mins. Iron rich & wholesome.

I pray for you & d'ter often, coz you're too young to suffer this. xx

Thanks BM, we'll try that with the hot milk. Going to bed now but I'll be back on tomorrow morning. Thank you x
When my OH suffered same he would only take chicken noodle soup.
You can add calories to stuff by adding cream.

What about fish pie? You could make a normal fish pie and then blend it. you will still get the flavour but it will be easily swallowed and topped with some creamy mash.
porridge is good

Aww tambo, you're very sweet. I just can't cope with the guilt when I was eating my tea next to him, I feel awful. I've got to say out of everything that's ever happened to him, this is the most difficult. I just hope they can figure out what's causing it. Hugs to you xx
L&P is really easy to make at home and then you can use butter, lots of spud and even put cream in to make it more wholesome - and more delish at the same time.
Similarly chicken and sweetcorn chowder for getting some protein down.
Try and incorporate some beetroot juice into the fruit smoothies.

pureed banana with coconut milk or regular milk if too rich
I really know nothing about nutrition but if you want calories could he not suck on some chocolate or any of the other high calorie foods we try to avoid. Also if he can stomach the smoothies idea blend it with full fat ice cream, use lots of butter in the mash [and cream instead of milk as BM suggested]
Sorry if thats no use...it sounds such an awful predicament.

Baked sweet potatoes. You don't even have to mash them.
