In a bid to get fit I've started swimming (as mentioned a few times) and seem to be enjoying it but I'm a really weak swimmer so I've just signed up for a term of group adult swimming lessons.

I told them I can swim but just want to learn some better techniques so they suggested that.

Has anyone been to adult swimming lessons? What shoud I expect? I'm really nervous, I feel like I'm going back to school and I hated school.

All the other learners will be in the same boat, or pool, as yourself. As you can swim, but only want to hone techniques, you'll have nothing to worry about. Go for it.

Thanks Sandy. I went swimming last night but I'm sooooo slow there were kids of about 7/8 years flying past me. It's really embarrassing.
Yes I have. I wear adult arm bands. It's a talking point.
Question Author
Really? Did you start as a non swimmer then? Or are you like me and just not very strong?

People don't laugh at each other do they?
They'd be small groups of people with the same aim as yourself. Why would they laugh at anyone?
I'm a nearly non-swimmer, I can only swim with the wall on my immediate left hand side.

Because some people can be not very nice Sandy. When I got out of the pool last night I swear I heard one of the kids from the Swim team make a Mooooo sound. Sob.
People in the group will be fine. You'll probably be better than most of them.
Question Author
I'm sure it will be fine, I just get myself in a panic about these things but I have finally found an exercise I seem to enjoy so want to try and make the most of it.

Do you enjoy it Boxy? I assume you'll be progressing to swimming lenghts unaided?
You can learn/practice some techniques without being in the pool. I taught myself to breath alternate sides for the front crawl whilst standing up in my living room. When I got into the sea I could do it straight away.
Question Author
Did you? That's quite impressive.

I watched a video on youtube yesterday about breathing techniques and tried it when I was in the pool but it just looked like I was trying to blow rasberries in the pool. lol

\\\\but just want to learn some better techniques \\\

Just slip a couple of slinky 2 piece costumes in a bag, get a flight over here and i will take you into the heated pool and "improve your techniques."
If you want to exercise as well what about aqua aerobics? That's a good work out.
Question Author
Sqad, while that might seem appealing in your head I can assure you the reality would make you shudder. :)

I do go to aqau aerobics but every time I've gone the past few weeks it's been cancelled for some reason so I just end up having a swim. That's how I found out I enjoyed it. I enjoy the AE too as it's something a bit different but I definitely feel like I get more out of just swimming. Mainly because I feel like my legs have turned to jelly after I get out of the pool when I swim.
Evian, I hasten to add that I could already swim the front crawl but I changed my breathing as every second stroke was to frequent for me and every 4th stroke left me gasping so it had to be every 3rd stroke.
I did a swimming improvers` course many years ago. Best thing I ever did. The rest of the class will be fine although I don`t remember anything about them at all - just the instructor. You`ll be too focused on him/her and what you are doing to take much notice of anyone else anyway.
jomifl - when I did my course they said the correct breathing for the front crawl is every third stroke.
