I think the most contagious time is when they are scabbed and weeping, but apparently you can pass the virus on as soon as the tingling feeling starts. Horrid, aren't they?
they're very contagious....apply dab of acetone & they'll be clear in a week. All cups you've used should be bleached to prevent more contamination.

Hes been putting stuff on it from chemist for about a week now and its scabbed
Do you know what. I have found the best thing to do is leave it alone. My dentist once told me to put vaseline on, so the scab wouldn't crack and bleed again. That gives it a chance to heal. Maybe that would be an idea?
Most cold sores are actually Herpes Simplex, which is a virus, and very contagious until it crusts over. They "can" also spread to your tongue and gums. If this is your first outbreak I am sure it is painful. They can last anywhere from 7-10 days. So if you kiss someone they could get Herpes and that is how it is spread. If it gets too painful or more on the surface, call your doctor for some anti viral meds. I dont know how to put this any other way, however if you give oral sex, the man can get Genital Herpes.
