I have never worn make up but would love a make up trial to learn what I should get. How do I decide which make up counter to go to at Boots? I probably don't want to spend a lot given that I won't wear it much. Any suggestions?

they are very very good at selling to you, you probably won't get past one! plus, if they apply it well and use the right products, you'll want to buy it all anyway. depending on the size of the store, there'll be quite a few to choose from so it's really entirely up to you. I live and breathe anything lancome, but my friend can't wear it, so it's really only down to your own personal preference and budget. do your friends have any that you can try without the sales pressure? i only ever used to get cheaper brands, until my wedding day and i splashed out, but i've never turned back! i really noticed a difference, but i have very temperamental skin!
I have found that Estee Lauder target women 30-40+. They do nice products but can be a bit expensive. Foundations are really good as they match it not only to your skin tone but also to your skin needs.

Clinique is also good and is aimed at a slightly younger market.

if you want some fun makeup, I would try Benefit.
Nice packaging and some fun items that you can wear when you want to wear makeup. I love Lemon Aid (it helps power eye shadow stay put). Also Benetint would be a good product for you as it is a lip balm with a red tint...perfect if you don't wear makeup often.

have fun shopping Alf!

I've recently bought a few items for my start up make up bag. I never used to wear make up but I to get rid of shine on my t zone and also start wearing an spf everyday. I went to debenhams and the lady on the clinique counter was very helpful. She colour matched the powder by putting some on me and she also put some blusher on me. I bought the powder called 'almost there' powder which was 18.50 but even though I liked the blusher didn't get it. You have to be careful as once they start putting things on you you might feel obliged to get them but just remember there are other shops and you don't have to purchase there and then - best to think about it. I also bought YSL Touche Eclat - highly recommend it. I think Clinique stuff is actually a bit over priced.
The powder also had an spf in it and I wear this everday now.

My routine is: -

1. wake up
2. Cleanse with Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish
3. Use Dermalogica Oil Control Lotion - to moisturise and combat shine and control oil levels.
4. Put Clinique powder on all over face - for shine control and sun protection.
5. Use Touche Eclat for under eye circles and to highlight.
6. Bit of colour on cheeks.
7. Bit of lipgloss on lips.
Why not do what I do...go to the makeup counters, see what you like then buy online.

it will save you a fortune. definately buy YSL touche eclat (buy online at cheapsmells.com) can save you over a fiver as it is very expensive in the shops.
thats what i do too, i find feelunique.com and strawberrynet.com very competitive (don't forget quidco for cashback and hotukdeals for discounts), even ebay sometimes.
Not in Boots but MAC are very good if you want a glam evening look.

Some beauticians and places like the Body Shop do make up lessons where they can show you how to achieve a good look.

Some reps for places like Virgin Vie are very good, they come and show you the products and give tips on make up and what suits who.

Aks at counters liek Clarins and Clinique if they are doing any promotional events you could attend. I've been to a Clarins one which was really good and everyone got a goody bag :)
