All my life (a long one) I have never used primer. I thought it was paint before you glossed. My friend told me she always uses a primer.
How do I know which to get. Are they coloured or clear? Any help would be appreciated. Do any of you lovely ladies use primer and can you recommend one. Thanks.

Smash box is a good primer. You use a very little dab and spread o ver your skin before any other product. Most are oil free so dont clog the skin. They give a nice even surface to put the rest of your makeup. Even if you don't wear make up they can give a nice even looking complexion . Love primers.
I am like you lidl, never heard of them and never used one, and have survived very well looking ok. Not about to start looking for yet another product!
Primer is good to use on materials that have not been painted at all before (bare wood, new plaster etc) because the coats above will adhere better if there is primer underneath.

But primer can also be used on anything (even if it has been painted before) as the next layers of paint will adhere better to primer than maybe the surface that was underneath the primer.
Whoops.

I assumed you were talking about paint primer, only just noticed you ask about "Make up primer".

In fact if you read your question (and ignore the "Make up" comment at the top) it can read that you are asking about painting.
Tee hee VHG. My husband calls it poly filler.
There are lots of good ones, nearly all the brands have their own but would agree with Brinjal, Smashbox is widely recognised as one of the best. They're famous for it.

Very funny VHG I did think you were a man answering, but why would you be looking at 'beauty' Perhaps my question wasn't asked correctly.
Thank you Brinjal and Prudie, I shall try Smash box, I always try to look my best. Thanks for the replies.
I followed the advice of Sali Hughes - beauty writer for the Guardian - she recommended one from Superdrug not much money too so its worth a shot
