Can anyone identify a book?

Does anyone know the title of a book in which there is a man with a wooden leg, but when being chased, he takes the wooden leg off, and can run normally ?

And another book (possibly the same one) in which someone, or some people, from a village behind a hill take a boat through a tunnel that's been cut through the hill. Further on their journey, they pass furnaces. Probably around the time of the Industrial Revolution.
