I was trying to remember a book that I read when I was a child ( so that makes it ... ah hem about 35 years ago ) A boy moves into a house and finds a model railway in an attic room and then discovers that the little people in the layout are alive.

Not much to go on I'm afraid

Could it be The Borrowers? The plot is similar, though not exact. Originally pub. 1953.

I was actually just trying to find out the name of the book myself when I came across your question... The book is "Model Railway Men" by Ray Pope.

It was definately one of my favourite books from childhood (also 30+ years ago :-) - especially as I had a train set in a homemade pullout shelf under my bed! I've also discovered there are actually more books in the series - Model Railway Men Take Control and Model Railway Men in America.. Can't wait to read those too...
