We live in a 200 year old farmhouse and we do occassionally (about 4 times in the last 6 months) see a strange vortex of mist moving around outside the area which was the original house's garden. On an otherwise clear and still night this can be quite disconcerting. Probably something atmospheric though.
well ours is smugglers and so on too. There are stories that you can still hear smugglers laughing and talking on the beach and sometimes lights flash on the water, though there are apparently no boats there. You allegedly also hear the boats bells clanging near the shore, and amazingly no boat! i'm a little skeptical and having never seen or heard anything, so I don't believe. but you never know....
A mate of mine at work is adamant he saw a spirit whilst staying at a local hotel which used to be a coaching inn.

During the night he woke up (admittedly he had been drinking) and saw the bottom half of a person in horse riding clothes walking over to the bed.

He was out of his mind with fear but said he couldn't move a muscle or even scream out to wake his wife...

There is a curious ending to this tale, a friend of his later stayed at the same hotel and his friend's wife later told them the same story... and my mate hadn't said a thing about his experience...

To make it even more curious, a report on a local TV magazine actually reported similar sightings... and I've just cacked myself coz it's nearly 1am and my computer just made a really scarey noise!!!

right then youv'given me some decent answers so i will tell you one of my favourites. This man i cant remember his name got caught by a servere snow storm when his car broke down he could see a farm house not to far from where his car had broken down.He struggled across the field to the house and tapped on the window the owners were having an arguement weather to let him in or not in the end they shouted out directions to the nerest viliage and the man left struggling on throught the snow towards a small wood.out of the trees come a riderless horse and his rider dressed in the garb of a smuggler not long after that another man on a horse comes throught the trees he was dressed as an exise man.Our man was watching this in horror and silence because there was no sound.Pistol shot spent they drew daggers the smuggler runs the other man through and flees our man struggles to the dieing exise man his blood staining the new snow red trying to hold him our man just puts his hand through him. he strugles on to the nerest villiage he and collapses 7 days later he returned to the farm to find out about it the farmer had seen it but they usally only here the shots and screams of terified horses. They had thought our man to be the smuggler and turned him away since then it has been seen many times on that lifless moor. Sorry its abit long winded but it has to be that way Gazzawaza i hope you like it i work in a inn where we have three friendly spirits.

I come from Burham, a small village in Kent, at the foot of BlueBell Hill (A229) which is meant to be haunted by a young girl. I have seen various telly programmes about it, with various theories, but I, and no one in my family, has ever seen anything, so Im not sure. I do believe in ghosts and things, but maybe just not this one.....
O I C - do they acknowledge/recognise humans in the house or simply ignore you? (Just wondering whether they try to communicate with you)
In northamptonshire there are a number of sites where civil war battles were fought, soldiers and horsemen are often reported by people around naseby. I used to work at the Avon factory in Northampton where the night shifters used to talk about a Nun who would walk through the grounds carrying bread, they said you could smell it as she went past!

I was once alone in my aunt's house, fluffling up the cusions of her sofa when I saw a little figure from the corner of my eye. I was so scared, I didnt want to turn around and see it, but then did (I still dont know if it was curiousity or the fear that 'it' would come closer) and for just a split second, saw a little boy standing there. I can remember every detail of his appearance very clearly. He was a very white child, with big black eyes and curly black hair, wearing a dark blue jumper with collars of a red shirt sticking out over it. And even though the description sounds sinister, he had the sweetest face. My uncle who is psychic (he has dabbled in the occult all his life) came home later that day and we were just talking about past lives and he brought up the fact that the spirit of a little boy follows my aunt in this life (he is supposedly from a previous life - and the way my uncle explained his presence was: 'because true love never forgets'). I hadnt mentioned my day's experience to him and when he mentioned this, I was so scared about what I had seen that I broke down in tears and shivers. Now, whenever I'm alone in my aunt's house I mentally ask the little boy not to show himself to me even though I know he's always there.
When i lived at home with my family many years ago i was once cleaning the bathroom floor during the middle of the day when the light cord was pulled and the light came on. I was nowhere near the cord and there was no one in the house except me at the time. I don't recall being frightened at the time but it spooks me to think of it now. There was no reason for that to have happened as you have to put pressure on a light cord to pull it.
This may not sound scary but as a small child I lived in my grans house, it was built around 1928 so in the 1960s it wasn't an old house, but at times when going upstairs, you would get that creepy feeling someone was watching you then you would get a cloying smell of decaying flowers. i never found out what caused it.I am now in my 40s and stay about 150yds up the road. One night my wife and I were watching telly, I swear I saw my youngest son going from the kitchen accross the hall into his bedroom, when I asked him what he was doing he answered from our bedroom no where near the kitchen. My wifes sister swears blind she came into our house one day letting herself in with a key as we wre out and she saw a small child sitting on the couch she was rather shocked but asked him what he was doing in the house he didn't answer and after a minute he vanished. Another night last summer we were out in the garden at the door of the house talking to the next door neighbour, she asked us who was in the house as my wife, kids and myself were all out side, when we said no one she told us she had just seen a man walk from our livingroom into our bedroom, as there is only one door into our house nobody had gone past us and all the windows were locked, probably an over active imagination or too much drink.
well i dont think that mine is scary, all i know is that my friends house is haunted, someone apparently got murdered in the garage, well one time i stayed at her house and we were watching tv and there was a large bang that came from upstairs, we looked towards the stairs and for a brief moment a long streak of light flew down the stairs, then an hour later sparkly lights where seen on the stairs, and then straight after that there was another large bang from upstairs. The following day many visiters came to the house and left claiming to see either shadows or mist floating on the stairs, it still continues to this very daty but as not as common.
Hiya, I have seen two ghosts (or spirits) The first when I was 10 yrs old, I was woken by my brother who wanted to say goodbye, I spoke to him for a while. It was only when I got up the next day did I find out he had died, an hour before I spoke to him. Before you cynics but in it wasn't a dream, I could hear my parents and my older brother (who the Marines had flown home) talking downstairs. The last time was a couple of years ago I awoke to see an old man stood in my room looking confused. When I described him my neighbour said it was the father of the girl we bought the house from. Incidently she died a week later (perhaps he had come to help her pass over) ????????
I have a similar story to beenee - I lived in an 18th century tied cottage on a farm in Kent when I was first married. In the bedroom, all beams and sloping floors, I became quite used to seeing a little girl out of the corner of my eye while I was dusting or making the bed etc. About 3 1/2 foot tall, with skimpy, light curly hair, she was dressed in what I would think was Victorian style - a calf length dress with a full pinafore over it. She would stand just inside the doorway, a fairly dark corner of the room, lit by the light from the window. She seemed to be watching me curiously. I always had the impression she was wondering who I was. I was never able to see her if I turned to look at her. Was it simply an optical illusion to do with the shadow and light in the beamed, low-ceilinged room? I am inclined to think so, but on the other hand ....?
cheers guys, im a lil 14 year old on my own in an old house, and my parents are out watching sum gig, and i already have a vivid imagination, now im scared shitless!
although i don't have stories as such, sum wierd stuff does happen to me. at my dad's house (altho ths sounds all b movieish and gay) alot of stuff started happening just after i was born. altho he calls it the 3rd child, b coz when i was born, there was another sack thing for another kid that didnt develop or sumthng. altho it started then, the kinds of things i remember happened about 2 years ago. the first was when my dad was emptying the spin dryer or sumthng, he picked up a basket and moved it to one side of him, when he looked back to where it was about 5 mins later, the area where the basket had been b4, was lying a small benson and hegdes ciggarette, perfect condition, facing the garage. my dad dosnt smoke so we have no idea where the cig came from. other things have happened, like the grill being lifted up and dropped, altho we dont see this, we can hear it from the living room. also, while my dad was alone in the kitchen, a chair tht we never used moved itself into the center of the room. one day when i was sleeping there, altho i didnt hear it, my dad herd sum1 open the door downstairs, walk up the stairs, and then he could hear someone walking around his bed. apparently when i was little, wed use to come home from school and stuff, and thered b a strong smell of tobacco in the living room and up the stairs, as soon as we shut the door it wud fade and dissapear. anything like this ever happend to anyone before?
I'm still scared of spiders and the thing(s) (creepy!!) that live under my bed. LOL not kidding thogh.
never seen any figures as such, but when i was 17 i lived in a crappy flat in a tower block and there was a definately sinister presence there.i was in bed one night and, believe it or not, something lifted the bed up by its bottom end and dropped it back on the floor, and no i was not asleep, drunk or stoned!i have also recently just worked at a place where tou had to sleep in and something sits on the end of the bed in the sleeping in room.
