Not sure if Im on the right Topic! maybe I should have chosen Jobs and Careers - anyway. I would love to do an Eng Literature Degree. Im 48 and really feel I missed out on lots of opportunities earlier. Are there any opportunities to do this - eg Access to Higher Education Courses etc. or am I pie in the skying?

I left school at 15 with 4 o levels but ive got a Masters degree now!
Go to your local university and ask them about entry requirements. They will probably advise you do an access course at a FE college for a year but if you show willing you should have no problem getting on after that. Mature students make for much better students and they will be glad to have you whether you have any formal qualifications or not.
Do it! - it will be the best thing you have ever done.
Good luck

Absolutely! Go for It!!! I'm mid 30s with a couple of banking degrees and 15 years of boring career behind me. I am in the first year of a full time fine art degree and feel like I have a second chance. If you're worried about money, everyone is entitled to 75 percent of the student loan without means testing and that should cover the tuition fees. If you're worried you'll be the oldest, you probably won't as there are a couple of retired poeple on my course fulfilling a lifetimes ambition. I had a friend who regularly said ' life is not a dressed rehersal, this is the real thing'.

The best thing about going to university as a mature student is the acceptance I have found from the other students. I consider some of them good friends now. The other thing about those extra 'few' years is the life experience you can put into your work, especially in a creative subject.

very best of luck

Have you checked out what's available from the Open University?

Hello, I did my degree in English Lit and there were about 6 mature students on my course (out of about 40). They all took access style courses to get on it and didn't have A levels etc. Go for it. You only live once. I thouroughly enjoyed it although I wish I'd done more work. As a young student I was just as interested in going out and having too much fun! I'm so in love with language and poetry etc. now that I wish I paid more attention and could do it all over again. For that very reason I think you're better suited to doing it at your age- you'll appreciate it far more than I did.
I did my first year of my degree in English Lit after an Open College B unit but in my second year I changed to a History with English Degree which I found more interesting. There were all ages and it was alot easier to get along with everyone than I expected, I tok 4 years to get my BA Combined Honours Histoy with English, as my Mum died during my third year but the Uni were very helpful and seem to appreciate that people have real lives, I was in the last entry when grants were non-repayable, 1997, so financially it was very easy , I would recomend it highly.

Hi, I'm doing an English lit degree at the moment (slight age difference though - i'm 20!) but there are a few people doing the course who are various ages. I'm not quite sure how you'd go about applying but you could try contacting the universities you're interested in. Have fun too - English lit is a fantastic degree course to do, i'm loving every second of mine!
