At my local library yesterday there were a lot of old fashioned (in my mind) cowboy and indian, western books on the shelves.

Does this mean they are no longer popular or are so popular they have to keep a large stock?

I remember some of my older male relatives enjoying this genre but I thought it had fell out of favour long ago.

I last read a Western when I was 12 or 13, I have no interest at all in the genre.  I thought they were out of favour 30 years ago.

I've never read one but a pal of mine was an avid reader. There was one particular writer I recall who always ended the book with a pun. Having borrowed money a cowboy remarks as the "hero" rides off - "There goes the loan arranger."😂

Question Author

😂

I loved them when I was a teenager  60-70 years ago. Used to take a pile of them from the library every week. My favourite was Zane Grey.

Many moons ago my late husband read Zane Grey.  He loved them.

Was that the 'Edge' series, davebro?

I used to enjoy those.

Might have been J T Edson, not sure.

Question Author

So is anyone reading them now?

Used to read quite a lot of J T Edson western books, in the mid to late 70s, until i came across the following line in one of his books; "Send me an army of men, or Captain Dusty Fog." I put the book down, unfinished and never read another western by that particular author.

I then moved on to the graphically gritty Edge novels, written by Gorge G Gilman.

Question Author

Thanks, all. I doubt anyone under 40 reads them - but I could be wrong

When I Googled 'Edge westerns' I learned that George G Gilman was actually just one of the names used by an English author, Terry Harknett.

Every day's a school day. 😊
