I want a site where I don't have to pay a monthly subscription but haven't manage to find one. The idea is to choose and pay for an audio book when I want to and not have to pay a monthly subscription whether I choose a book or not. Any idea if such a site exists please?

Are you with Prime? You can download books with audio, as and when you want to.

Do you mean Amazon Prime Pixie? If so the answers no. Does it require a monthly subscription?
Ah. Yes, it is a monthly subscription , sorry. If you had already had it, it wouldn't be an "extra" is what I was thinking x

Ah yes, I see BUT you've reminded me that I paid a one off fee to watch a documentary on Amazon a few months ago without joining Prime. So if they have talking books on there then I can probably do the same. Brilliant. Thank you. BTW as I will probably not use the service much, paying as and when is better for me.
Fair enough. I use mine for deliveries, music, films etc, but I believe the books have been added on more recently x
You can buy Audible books at Amazon without a subscription, they push subscription had but there is a 'buy it now' option. PS Audible is Amazon's brand name, if you expand your search to audio books you might find more. Google seem to offer this but it's via the Playstore and I don't have Android.

Thank you Fixer, that gives me more options. Another question if I may. Do you know if it happens that a book may be recorded by more than one person?
Sorry, no idea, I've never bought one, borrowed a couple and then find I haven't concentrated and end up not knowing what's happened! Pretty sure they always say who has narrated them if that helps
They can if you have the account, but I'm not sure with a "one-off" purchase.
I download talking books from local library website, you ‘hire’ them for 3 weeks just like books
Prime is best for you.
We have ebooks at the library too. Here's a link to ours which might help give you a picture of how it works and then you can search for it via your own library ladybirder. Its all free and good to support the library service.
