Asked same question for my daughter a while ago and everybody came back with great suggestions, it was easy to cherry pick as her tastes are quite similar to mine. Never having been an 11 year old boy, my son is a different matter. He is interested in history, enjoys books that make him laugh. He's done the usual along with my daughter, Walliams, Dahl, Rowling. I would like to suggest something he maybe wouldn't pick off the library shelf himself. Any recommendations?

Any of the Horrible Histories books.
The Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz
I would suggest the Famous Five, although that is frowned upon these days.....I am awfully glad that it wasn't in my day !
My 11 year old grandson read "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" in his last year at primary.
What are his hobbies and interests?
The Lone Pine series, by Malcolm Saville.

Terry Pratchett

No mercy, he likes history, art, cycling, computer games.
I read and thoroughly enjoyed the series by Eoin Colfer about Artemis Fowl. He is a teenager who has friends who are fairies. Sounds a bit naff, but the books are brilliant.
Three men in a boat. Jerome K Jerome. He'll learn just how daft three grown men can be, and he'll laugh himself silly.
The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff. It is set in Roman Britain, and I think there are others in the series
Terry Pratchett.
As a sample of his non-discworld work try him with. this - they get stuck in to his Discworld stuff.

'The Gauntlet' by Ronald Welsh. Have read this to classes from 9 - 12yrs. Without exception, both boys and girls loved it and one boy was so enthralled that he decide to study History. .....Peter fell asleep on the slopes around Carreg Cennan castle and woke to find an iron gauntlet in his hand -.
