Book "told" By A Chair

I once read a book ( many years ago) which was supposed to be the story of a chair, told by the chair itself, including all sorts of grand places it had been kept, and all sorts of grand people who had sat on it. Has anyone read it, can you remember the title or author ? Some friends of mine are doing writing exercises about "chairs".

I tried looking for it earlier and many of the books were non-fiction.

Can you remember when (which decade) the book was written and if it was for kids or adults. I am off to bed but might try again in the morning.

Ir wasn't a children's book. It was definitely an adult book, and I must have read it well over 20 years ago. Which is not to say that it was new when I read it.

Sounds like one of Charles Dickens inserted stories. He used sometimes to put a tale or two within a tale.

As I said, it was definitely not a children's book. And as Mrs Walton's book seems to be a religious publication ( and I am a dyed-in-the-wool atheist), I am pretty sure it wasn't her book, either. Any more ideas ?
