How do I know if I have a First edition book?

I have both the chamber of secrets and the prisoner of azkaban in hardback and they were bought as soon as they came out. Does this make them first edition?

Have a look at this link.  It seems that Bloomsbury use a reverse numbering system so that if you have the numbers "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1" then it might be a first edition.  I think if you wanted to sell it though you would need to ask an expert to be sure it was definitely a 1st ed.

The prisoner of azkaban is only valuable as a first edition if it has the printing error in the first chapter, as specified on the website above.
