I read Stephen Fry's autobiography years ago - highly recommended - but am still confused. What, who, when, why or how? Moab is my washpot means what?

Mr Fry, if you're an ABer please put me out of my misery - I loved The Stars Tennis Balls!

Anyone else, all his works are fantastic, The Hippopotamus is the best book I've ever re-re-re-re-re-re-read.

It's a biblical quotation. Click here for more information.

Thanks QM. Now, who was Moab and what was a washpot? Don't have time to read all of Pslams tonight for an explanation I probably wouldn't understand anyway. What is the relevance to Stephen Fry I wonder?
and yes, I do own several bibles.
Also, Psalm 60:8.

Moab, a country in the Old Testament, which had threatened Israel, was to be so completely subdued, and become so utterly contemptible as to be likened to a washpot or basin in which men wash their feet...
Were there any particlarly anit-homsexual views expressed therein? I only ask as Mr Fry is very proud to be gay (and why not) and wondered if he is sticking two fingers up to organised religion in some way

I think the reference has something to do with him airing all his "sins" in order to achieve forgiveness from his "victims". I own the book, but haven't read it for a few years, but I seem to remember that this was what he was referring to.

And yes, Hippopotamus is a great book!

When I read the book I decided that MOAB stood for "My Own AutoBiography". It made some sense as he did seem to be using it to wash away some past sins. I missed the religious reference as along with many other passages in the book I lack his education & intelligence.
