What was the name of the programme shown in the 1970/80s about how life would be after a nuclear attack in Britain? It was incredibly graphic and had people genuinely running scared. How can I see it now? I'm an internet luddite so please be as explicit as possible. Thank you.

It could be "When the bomb drops" which follows a family from the first warning to a nuclear winter. The film was banned & I think it did appear on Channel 4's "banned" series. you could try

I think this is the one you are describing, though it is a bit earlier that the dates you give.

The War Game (1964)

Peter Watkin's chilling drama documentary about a nuclear attack on Kent exposed the nation's Civil Defence programme and gave the public a grim realisation of the consequences of such an attack. Made for the BBC, it was banned from television broadcast for 20 years because of the disturbing scenes. However the ban did not stop its cinematic distribution and it went on to win four major film awards, before being broadcast on the BBC in 1985 as part of a nuclear war After The Bomb strand.

Could it be The Day After (1984)?
There was also a film called "Threads" which I seem to remember showed the Sheffield following a nuclear war.

Thanks everyone. I remember it was shown on tv when I was a LOT youger - everyone was talking about it in the playground but I wasn't allowed to watch it! I'm a big girl now though so I'm curious to see if it is still as shocking today.
I think that the programme you're after was probably 'The War Game', as previously mentioned, though there was also an excellent cartoon 'When The Wind Blows' by Raymond Biggs (of 'The Snowman' fame) about an elderly couple, based on his parents, and how they cope with a nuclear attack.
I'll agree with maggi as I think you mean 'Threads', first shown by the BBC in September 1984 and repeated the year after along with 'The War Game'. 'Threads' has been shown on BBC4 at least twice in the past year, so it may get shown again. And yes, it's still horrible.

I reckon (as "The War Game" wouldn't have been shown until much later) the aforementioned "Threads" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090163/ ) is more likely. It's due for a DVD re-release in September, but it's possible copies from it's 2000 release may be available if you shop around (there's a few on eBay).

There was a brilliant series in the 70s called "Survivors" but it wasn't set following a nuclear war, it was after a leak of a deadly virus from a laboratory in the far east.
Ah Survivors!!!!  Thank you, once i started reading this post i could not think of the title of that series!  Saved me posting a question!
Definitely 'Threads'.  It's nasty viewing.
