Hello again from “Regal Roslyn”.

Yes it is only a few months ago that I was the setter, but no-one was prepared to accept gen2’s challenge so I’m afraid you are stuck with me again!!

I hope you are all enjoying the Easter Weekend and don’t overdo the “eggs” tomorrow! We all know the Christian Story of Easter but what about all the traditions that have emerged through time? How did Easter get its name? One belief is that Easter got its name from the Goddess of Spring called Eostre who some people worshipped long before Jesus was born. At that time it was thought that the sun died in Winter and was born again in Spring when days would lengthen and the sun’s power would return. In Europe, Eostre was the bringer of Spring.

Easter Day is always on a Sun, but the date varies from year to year. Many years ago Christians decided that Easter Day should always be on the Sun following the first full moon after the first day of Spring on Mar 21st. This means that Easter can be as early as March 22nd or as late as April 25th.That’s why it’s called a “moveable feast”. Easter can even happen on different dates depending on where in the world you live. In Eastern Orthodox churches the date will be next weekend. That’s because we use the Gregorian calendar whereas the east use the Julian one.

The custom of giving eggs at Easter celebrates new life. For Christians the egg is a symbol of the resurrection, as when they are cracked open they stand for the empty tomb. In some countries parents tell their children the Easter Hare or Bunny has hidden chocolate eggs and they race to find them round the house or garden. Rabbits have been associated with springtime since ancient times. It is believed that the hare was Eostre’s sacred animal. Rabbits being similar, Christians changed the symbol to the Easter Bunny.

We now seem to see Hot Cross Buns available all year round in the shops although they are traditionally eaten on Good Fri. Simnel Cake is traditional at Easter – it’s a light fruit cake similar to a Christmas cake covered in marzipan. On the top of the cake round the edge are 11 marzipan balls representing the 11 faithful apostles.

In some countries such as the USA, 'egg rolling' is a popular Easter game. This is usually done with decorated hard-boiled eggs. The most well known event is on the White House Lawn where children and parents push the eggs along the grass with wooden spoons. But we don’t need to go to the US to see egg-rolling. I grew up in Lancashire and many an Easter Monday was spent egg-rolling on Avenham Park in Preston. I remember one year (I must have been about 5) I rolled my egg too far down the slope and got myself lost. A policewoman reunited me with my mum after about an hour and an ice cream cone!

An Easter bonnet represents the tail-end of wearing new clothes at Easter. Modern Easter bonnets for children are usually wide-brimmed hats with a ribbon around it. It may also have flowers or other springtime motifs on top, and may match a special dress picked out for the occasion. It is still popular in some Infant Schools to get children to bring in their own Easter Bonnet for a competition.

Thank goodness we don’t live in the Czech Republic where a tradition of spanking or whipping the women is carried out on Easter Mon! Luckily it’s not painful and legend says that women should be spanked with a whip decorated with ribbons in order to keep their health and beauty during the next year.

According to normal practice, for the everyday running of MM, I shall follow this rule on word length, in that each of my pre-selected link words contains at least four letters and at most eight letters. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts!

Each of the selected link words may go in front of, or behind my challenge word.
The competition will officially close on Sunday Evening at 7.00pm, when gen2 will declare my pre-selected words and then apply the same rules for awarding points that have been applied during all MM Link Games in the past. My set of four words to have their links predicted should appear below at 9.00am.
Good morning Regal Roslyn - so good to have you in charge again - I always
learn something new from you.

Very Happy Easter to you and your John
