April come she will
May she must stay
June she'll change her tune
July she will fly
....only really know it from Simon and Garfunkel

May I suggest that's the cuckoo poem though Mosaic
By all means
it goes something like this
the blackbird comes in april
in may he sings all day
in june he changes his tune
in july he prepairs to fly
in august go he must
No it goes
The cuckoo comes in April
He sings his song in May
He changes tune in the middle of June
And July he flies away.

Neither swallows nor blackbirds do any of that (apart from swallows arriving in April)

Thank you everyone for a whole variety of answers. I shall pass these on and am sure one will fit in with his recollection. Thank you again for all your help.
That's the one we attribute to the cuckoo:

In April I open my bill
In May, I sing all day
In June, I change my tune
In July, away I fly
In August, away I must

Cuckoo, cuckoo, good day to you!
This is the version I know!

The Cuckoo

In April come he will
In May he sings all day
In June he'll change his tune
In July he will fly
In August go he must
