Can anybody recommend me a good book of poetry. I know tastes will differ but I'm looking for a mixture of poems, from popular and well known poets.

The Rattle Bag, an anthology chosen by Ted Hughes and Seamus Heaney is a pretty good selection of poems. Highly recommended
I would suggest "The Rattle Bag" also-excellent.
The Albatross Book of Verse
The Oxford book of English verse for older stuff. Any collection of Philip Larkin's works for a bit more modern.
I agree with the recommendation for The Nations Favourite Poems. It has a great selection of traditional and modern .

A really good place to start reading poetry. I have it and often re-read it.
I am reading Rod McKuen's A Safe Place to Land and i quite like it.
I know you're looking for a mix, but this is the best collection of love poems I've read in a long time:

Also, you may want to pick up a copy of Ambit magazine and see how you get on.

All the best,
Spare Ed
Palgrave's Golden Treasury.
Rowanwitch would be a good person to ask as she is very keen on Poetry.
She is good at writing it as well.
