I did cover DeSade as part of a module on the Enlightenment in my History degree, don't recall why, but it was disturbing yes, especially the graphic detail.
Is it on CBeebies right after Tweenies and before Dora the Explorer? If not, then sadly no :-(

I've actually read, well started reading one his books- 180 days of Sodomy (i think), but it was truly eye poppingly gross and disturbing, I think I stopped on page 3 or something.
yes B00 it is abit gruesome, all those servant girls he destroyed, they say kids are affected by TV stuff, but alot of these freaks that commit crimes now worship that sort of historical wierdo.
I was actually naively under the impression that books from that long ago could not be that graphic, oh how wrong I was!
That is why Sadist has been an established word for so long B00.
Now Masochist, well he was a right nutter
(Leopold von Sacher-Masoch )
Yeah I know that dotty, fully aware where the word sadist came from, but I honestly believed that he was some sort of 'soft porn' writer. I was bearing in mind that society was scandalised if a woman even showed as much as an ankle.

Hi Guys :-)
I have read 120 Days of Sodom. I am finding the philosophy of it so bizarre. Libertarianism.
I am still deeply disturbed by what I read.
Dotty? why did you have to read de sade for your history?
I can't remember Beryl but we did, I did several modules and i would have to have alook at the course work to find out, i think it was all part of the emmergence of literature and novels during the enlightenment
I have read some Marquis de sade, and when you do you soon come to realise where the word sadism comes from, he was a sexual pervert, although to be fair to him, part of the time he was only doing what all french nobility had been doing for years, arranging orgies etc.and yes I did find it disturbing

Blimey Dot. I wouldn't use the term 'enlightenment' for that book lol....
I'm still curious about the libertine movement.
What type of people call themselves libertines now? and no!!! not that ghastly pop group.

B00? why did you start to read it in the first place?
Because I'd heard of him, but never read any of his books. Got to admit, I was hoping for some juicy tamish porn inside the pages (what???lol)- I was left however utterly gobsmacked by what was really inside!
The enlightenment is an academic term used to describe the period of advancement in the developing countries of Europe
I would think anybody who does wahtever they want without any restraint would be regarded as a "Libertine" ignoring morals and all religous beliefs, would that be about right dotty ?
After my divorce I went out with a woman who'd read it several times, & I played the part of the Marquis in the bedroom...As you can imagine is got very heavy. Thankfully I got-out of the relationship in one piece !!
Question Author
lol... and there's me thinking the way to enlightenment was through Buddha :-)

Ray. Hello by the way :-) excuse my rudeness please.

B00!!! stoppit lmao hehe....
I read 120 days of Sodom. It was a pervy fascination that led me to read it. Content aside, I love French literature. Even translated the words seem more beautiful than if written in English. It didnt disturb my soul, I have read worse.

I read the book of O too through similar curiosity. I just felt all sad for her.
