Almost anything by James Herbert........ The Magic Cottage would possibly be a good one to start with, less gory and quaintly spooky.

"The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James. "Only" a short story, but real, old-fashioned suspense, and nasty shocks too like they just don't make anymore..!! Plus, your friend will be talking like a dictionary by the time she's finished..!! :-)
