Redirection of mail by the Post Office.

Can anyone tell me how it is handled please? For example, do the sorting office workers have to notice mail that is addressed to your old address, and physically remove it? Or is there some way that a machine shows up old addresses?

Just wondering how it works, as I have been getting letters for the family who used to live at my house, but they have told me they've paid for redirection of their mail. It's not a big problem for me to pop it back into the post - I'm just curious as to whether it is easy for the PO to miss change of addresses.

TIA for any replies. x

As far as I know (from talking to my postman, as I was also curious), there is nothing sophisticated about it - no machines etc - mail goes through the system normally, and the delivering postman has a list of which address/surname combinations are redirected, and he takes those letters back and they are sent to a redirection centre.
Note that it's not an address that's redirected - it's a combination of surname and address - you have to pay per surname - I recently moved and I think it was about 17 pounds per surname.

Yes bednobs, I expect the post will be at least a day late. Thanks for reply.
You can obtain a Form from your local Post Office to fill in all the relevant details regarding change of address.
I had my Mail re-directed for 3 months when I moved house but there is a charge for this service...can't remember how much I paid now as it's 7 Years ago but it was not a great deal anyway and it's worth it.
You can actually renew it on line redman......I ended up having mine re-directed for a year (I do get a lot of post)
Fan mail no doubt craft ! Must be from all those Men in Uniform you met on your Cruises....lol
I get the most post!

Yes it is simply a card and labels, and extracted prior to delivery. Can be very dodgy if you have no regular postman tho.
