Laptop when switched on comes up "logging off"

My mum has a laptop when she switched it off last time it froze on "logging off" so she just closed it down.

Now when she tries to start it all she gets is "logging off". She has tried switching it off and on again and gets no further.

Can she try anything else simple (she is in her 80's so it needs to be basic)?

is she holding the powr button down for 10 seconds or so?

if yes
unplug power unit - remove battery

count to 10

reassemble - restart
