Swear words on AB are routinely bleeped out with asterisks, so vigorously that even something like 'who.... recently' may vanish. I think that's proper, on a family site. And yet AB Ed you're permitted an authentic four-letter word in your blog. How so? If the robots won't touch you, I believe you should censor yourself a bit more firmly.

jno, To which word do you refer? Is it the Grope Cnte one?

I believe anyone entering the monastery first has to have all the jags. Our Dear Ed has obviously undergone this process and is now immune. The rest of us have to resort to trickery in order to make our meanings clear.

I can't quite believe that AB Ed had the Gaul to post that. The only thing that I can see is that across the Atlantic that particular term doesn't carry quite the same resonance as it does on these shores, though that's no excuse IMO.
I was appalled when I saw that. It is just being disgustingly dirty for the sake of it and for no other purpose.
Get over yourselves it's a perfectly legitimate word. Do you really think that your kids don't look up "rude" words in the dictionary or would you perhaps like them removed from your schools in case they do? It was not used in an inappropriate context so why the gasps of horror? And the C**t word you are referring to is an extreme expletive in the US, hardly ever heard as a curse because of the disdain it's viewed with, so it's not that the Ed is unaware, she was just using it within a literary and historic context which in the real world is quite acceptable.

there's a rule against profanity on the site, on the grounds that it's a family site where parents ought to be able to feel their children can be let loose safely; it's usually enforced by the robots, but I'm curious why AB Ed isn't censored. I think that - like any rule - it should apply to all.

jno I was surprised that ABE mentioned it but I forgot to comment. There are enough folk on here already who seem to think it's ok to be profane as long as they are clever about it. Innocent combinations are routinely censored and yet the "C-word" was not affect when used by ABE

noxlumos we all know it is a legitimate word but the fact that ABE sought to give it the prominance by including it in her blog was an error in my opinion

I think, on consideration, that the word should have contained asterisks, but it didn't shock me and I wouldn't have found it too bad if a youngster read it. It was in historical context and if a child really didn't know what it meant they would ask a parent who I hope could explain it without emotion and also explain that the word is not to be used in public.

As this is a family site - maybe the Ed will look more closely at the editing side of it.

Having said that, the word didn't offend me personally as it is an historical term. I've heard worse in the streets & on TV, but that doesn't make it right on here!

BTW - I remember watching the series Roots starring a man called Kunta Kinta....I'm sure some people might have mocked his first name, but the correct sounding of it was Koonta!

I agree jno, by the way did u have a good holiday? I go to Antigua on saturday, can't wait!
