The incident occurred during campaigning for Wednesday's presidential election – a race that is already mired in controversy. Early voting for those with Covid-19 ended on Saturday and was blighted by long waits and some voters receiving used ballots.

Reuters could not independently verify the images in an uploaded video on YouTube, but party officials said Song was in a stable condition and a suspect was in police custody. President Moon Jae-in has called the attack a "terror against democracy". Election frontrunners Lee Jae-myung of the Democrats and Yoon Suk-yeol of the conservative opposition People Power party both condemned the attack on Song, who is also Lee’s campaign manager. Polls have the top two candidates running neck-and-neck ahead
of polling day.
