As I sit typing this, I can hear distant bangs and thumps in a way I imagine people heard noise from the Front a few miles away in WW1.

I would love to think that this was it - but experience tells me that this is going to be a nightly occurrence, and some will be a lot closer, through to New Year's Eve at least.

When did 'Bonfire Night' turn from one night to three months - and why?

Any ideas?

Around the same time Christmas became a full-on two month festival :)
Fawkes knows.

Goodgoalie - we are into three months now, Christmas stock in shops and ads on TV before Halloween now!!!
I'm sure they get louder every year.
Some sound as if they are going off in my back garden, nearly give me a heart attack!
Fireworks were originally for the purpose of Guy Fawkes night, November 5th, but now they go off for any occasion.
They were even going off near me last week when the clocks went back!
As a child, it was always exciting, waiting for November 5th evening. Patiently waiting in anticipation.
How things gacmve changed.
I couldn't sleep for hours last night, I'm sure I could her loads of fire works being let off at 3.30 am!
Because it became possible for people to buy fireworks easily all year round.
andy, the mines that exploded during the battle of Messines Ridge were heard by Lloyd George, in England, 150 miles away.

Are you quite sure your local squibs are on that scale?
Weren't Lloyd George and banging synonymous at one time?
I believed he liked a golden rain, yes
Around here we have many people celebrating Diwali which also involves a lot of fireworks
Far, far fewer round here, thankfully. And non in the week before either, most unusual.

I heard bombs in Chelsea in 1973 and then Arena 2017 go off
Low on the horizon - literally just over the roof tops - and sharper ( more high frequencies)

2017 I wondered if I should go and help - but would they let people in? The answer was no: the police isolated them and let them bleed to death ( current hearings in Manchester)
yeah but no but - messine was an exception that was why it was recorded - and was squandered. They let it off and said - golly I say that was a big-whizz bang! and did nothing more

I am not sure if Big Berth used to reduce Paree in 1870 was heard in Lundy ( I think yes)

fireworks are governed by law - none on sale before Oct 31 midday.
a neighbours son holds the record for shortest length of time to injury - 1500 on the first day blew a finger off in his bedroom
( where he was playing with 'it')
// I believed he liked a golden rain, yes//
he found enough women to do it - - free !

Trump had to pay - and... there may be video. the er golden ticket!

Lloyd George was known in the commons as The Old Goat
subject of a double bill - two short plays by Tom Stoppard

1976 -
There were people setting off fireworks by my house in the beginning of October , honestly , my dog had such a fright he jumped up and knocked the Christmas tree over
Why the British feel the need to celebrate a failed Terrorist attack on the Houses of Parliament that happened over 400 years ago beats me.
It’s likely to be Diwali rather than bonfire night. We have double bubble now.

Not now, but a few houses down from our old address, which was a smal cul-de-sac, a family of Clampets moved in and blocked their street with their two fifteen-hundred-weight vans all the time, and at any vague opportunity, they let of display-volume fireworks in their back garden that made our windows rattle!!
andy-huges wow whats it like in beverley hills?
Thank God it's over. Several dogs have been reported to die from either a heart attack or running away and being hit by cars and one German Shepherd is missing. Heartbreaking. And God only knows the effect it has had on wildlife. I'm lucky my dog isn't scared, but I have two friends whose dogs are petrified and it is NOT nice to witness. The petition to the government has reached over 800,000 signatures now to ban them for sale to the public, but as usual, I am sure they will do nothing !!
