Is It True That Mods Can Remove Their Own Posts?

I see a couple of ABers have referred to a mod removing his/her own posts. Is this allowed? And how would we know who had removed a post although I suppose it is highly unlikely one mod would remove the post of another mod. Just interested as if it's true it seems unfair to me. Any thoughts?

What is a mod?
I am not techy at all but would suspect that AB can still see posts after they have been removed. I thought that ed would have some sort of audit trail.
They're the ones on the scooters.
If indeed it is true and happened for the wrong reason, I would think that would be seen as a misuse of their position as Moderator and be acted upon.

I hope so anyway.
Why do you think it's unfair?
Why must a serious enquiry receive a facetious answer?
It is ever so sadly Danny.
A moderator Danny.
Thank you Eccles, what do they moderate?
They are regular users who have the additional ability to remove posts that are deemed inappropriate.
Answerbank Moderators keep watch for anything that may contravene the Site Rules and deal with them accordingly, put briefly.
Thank you both for the explanation :-)
ladybirder - the willingness or appropriateness of removal of one moderator's post by another moderator would depend on all moderators knowing who all the other moderators are - and I doubt that is the case.
///Is this allowed?///

I have been on AB for years and have never worked out what a Mod can or cannot do, but by and large it is moderated well......if at times over-moderated.

Some years ago, Ed, in reply to a question as to the attributes required of a Mod gave a quite an exhaustive answer which on reflection was indeed pious to say the least.

Only today we have a thread started by a Mod on which another Mod has "goaded" an ABer..........

Take my advice ladybirder......go with the flow.........it doesn't have to be "fair"............life isn't always.
I think I know who you refer to Ladybirder - they did remove one of their own posts a while back(they gave an explanation which I can't recall).

This of course gets dragged up from time to time on the more heated threads.

Come on ... spill!!

Sorry Danny, I see others have answered your queries. TBH I didn't think you were serious, I thought everyone who has been here a while would know.

So is it true? Can any mod say if they are allowed to remove their own posts or is it a secret?
They can I believe but they would need a good reason - I thought I had outlined that above, sorry.
divebuddy - "The whole Mods thing on here is very unsatisfactory in my opinion.
Some of them don't mind telling us they are mods. And it seems OK for some of them to accuse posters they know to be ex-policemen of being the sort who are bent and fit people up, It also seems OK for some of them to rant about another poster and carry their grievance across several different threads.

On the other hand posts are deleted for no apparent reason. The deleted posts are often little different from the rest (that aren't deleted). There just seems no sense or logic to it.

People can even be suspended without really knowing why. That also seems wrong.

Perhaps ED could post something that explains what powers the mods have, what can they actually do. What criteria they are supposed to apply in making decisions. I say "supposed" because it seems to me that some people can say what they like with apparent impunity but others most certainly can't. Some of the personal comments made by people I know to
be mods makes me wonder whether they are fit for the job.

How about it, ED."

My take on the Mod idea is this -

The Ed cannot be on line 24/7 so some long-standing contributors who have been deemed suitable by the Ed are given moderator powers, to assist in keeping the site broadly on the straight and narrow.

I would guess that if the Ed decided that any Mod was over-stepping their responsibilities, he would have a word, or even recind their powers, but that is a matter for the Ed and any Mods concerned.

I would hope that no Mod used their power inappropriately, but responded to items and or threads they saw as inappropriate in a fair-minded way, and in the spirit of the site, and of reasonable debate.
