Would it be possible to have the option to 'close' a thread?

Like if you post a thread, have received the answer you're looking for and marked a best answer, to then be able to close it.

I think this would be good, as I feel rude when I realise someone further has answered my question, but I've not responded as I've already had the answer.

Does that make sense?

I think mods should be able to close threads.

it does ... and it is a very good idea

contact the ED, see what he says

Glad you understood what I meant. I tend to type away... :-)

I'm assuming ed reads these?

It was tried a while back....and was 'mis-used'.
I think we had that facility for a very brief period back when AB was a bit-shall we say-rowdy.
Question Author
Oh really? Ah, that's a shame.

I'm not sure how it could be mis-used, but I'll take your word for it! :-)

Question Author
AB was "rowdy"? lol

Very.....
users closed threads down when they felt they were losing an argument.
I think mods should be able to close threads.
Question Author
Oh, I see. Kind of like having the last word?

If people were aware of the rules, though, this wouldn't be a problem. Same with any other rule: break it and you run the risk of being suspended/banned.
I still think it's a good idea :-)

For example, a thread would opened saying something annoying and closed immediately. When others tried to respond they couldn't and new threads were created to answer original, closed, threads.

It was rubbish to be honest, and not something we'll be doing again.

If you wish to no longer receive update when someone responds, unsubscribe from the question.

That's not really what my suggestion was about, but that is actually a very good idea. It could quickly put a stop to anything becoming... er.. "rowdy".
Question Author
Right. Ok. Now I understand.

I don't have a problem with being notified that someone has responded to a question, just the fact I don't often check my email account that much, so I tend to miss them and then feel rude that I haven't said thanks :-)
I can see a problem in that someone may ask a question, receive an inaccurete answer from a self-appointed 'expert' and thinking that they have been answered correctly, close the thread only for a true expert to log on later and be unable to correct the mistake.
With potentially disastrous results in categories such as health and law etc.
Couldn't one say something like...' I'm just off to the mosque to sell 'watchtower', as a hint that you won't be returning.
Question Author
Yeah, good point Shoota. I didn't think of it like that.

Jomifl, lol. That's where I've been going wrong!
