So sad.... information from Loch of the Lowes Centre
It is with a heavy heart that we write to let you know that the remaining osprey egg was predated at 17:16 this evening.
Despite promising behaviour that suggested the resident female might have been sensing that a hatch was potentially underway, LF25 had been spending longer and longer periods off the egg over the last few days, culminating in her flying off territory this afternoon, leaving the egg unprotected from potential predators.
We are not sure why there had been a sudden change in her behaviour, whether she sensed something was not viable with the egg, if something spooked her, or whether her inexperience as a first time breeder contributed to failure at the last hurdle.
Although the crow did not manage to make off with the egg, or eat it, the egg was damaged and has been buried out of reach, deep within the edge of the nest.
Both LM24 and LF25 have been back to the nest since and briefly tried to 'incubate' the empty nest cup.
Alternative from over the pond. The bird was tidying up the nest just now and I thought I could see at least three eggs. Bird seems tired, a bit earlier it (he or she?, I have no idea) kept dozing off then suddenly jerking its head up again (a bit like me some evenings😀).
