Last year I had blue tits in my box which was wonderful. I checked the other day and there is a lot of nesting material in it. Shall I remove it, or wait a bit? I thought they might use the box to shelter in now it's so cold.

I always remove mine in the Autumn. I should leave it for now. The blue tits will sort it out themselves.

Will they take the old stuff out? I remember many years ago emptying a box and finding a dead baby. It was so sad and wondered if they would have been able to remove that.
It would have been best done in the Autumn, but I would do it now as it could provide shelter. Hang up some food next to it if possible.
Hellywell you have a good point. Its not always a given the same pair will return to the box, so a nice clean box will encourage nesting.
