Heard the spotted woodpecker drumming today. I thought this was the earliest I had heard it - usually when it is mild in February is the earliest. Is it establishing territory or seeking a mate, or...? Still snow on the ground here in Leicester. It must be an optimistic soul.

"Heard the spotted woodpecker drumming today."

Just think yourself lucky he wasn't playing the bagpipes.

LOL rojash. You are probably right! The nice thing about the drumming is the set interval between each session. Do they wait for the echo or the reverberation to stop? Bagppes do go on a bit. Fine in the Highlands, not so good in Leicester centre.
