Lump on dog's leg

Yesterday my dog had a red, hairless lump removed off his leg. It's been sent away to be checked but I'm really worried. He is absolutely fine in himself. He wants to play, eat and drink and his tail never stops wagging. Articles on the internet have scared me into thinking he is going to die. Surely a dog this healthy must be ok mustn't he?

Don't frighten yourself by reading too much crunchiesmum, lots of dogs have harmless lumps & bumps. What breed is he & how old?

He's a golden labrador and nearly 5. He seems so well in himself. I'm trying not to panic but can't help it.
I know, we worry like hell over our pets. Labs I believe are prone to harmless lumps (some friends used to have them) so try to stay positive & calm...I hope it's all good for both of you.

Thank you. Even if it is a skin cancer I think they are curable once it's been removed.
crunchie.....remember this axiom........." Commonest things occur commonest and the commonest lump in Labrador is benign"
Don't worry too much crunchiesmum, two years ago Max had quite a large lump removed from his back, which turned out to be a cyst something that is fairly common according to the vet , Max made a full recovery, but he did look funny for a few months as he's a long haired GSD and he had an eight inch square of hair shaved off for the operation.
our gsd had a lump on her chest it turned out to be a fat lump it was the size of a 50p
all of our weimaraners have had lumps of various kinds, never harmful. Do remember the dog will pick up on your feelings so stay positive for his sake ((hugs))
My ex had a golden lab and he used to get these all the time - I think as he got older they just stopped getting them removed as they were harmless and the removal procedure was more distressing to him than the lumps were. They were just like big warts, but they never did him any harm. Chin up, I'm sure your dog'll be just fine ;)
And when I say 'he', I mean the dog, not my ex ;)

Thank you to everyone. After watching the dog wolf down a huge bowl of food this morning and wanting to play ball, your answers have made me feel better. Thanks again.
