What are they after near the back door?

If you know where their nest-holes are put the rat poison down them.
Question Author
They had burrowed under the kitchen floor and had a family!! The back door is a wooden frame, which is pretty old.
they must be trying to get into the kitchen, i guess they are haven for the little critters.
The cheapest answer is a cat usually.
Can you borrow one from someone for a couple of weeks ?
Otherwise, try the council or Rentokil. (Not to borrow a cat, but to get rid of the rats).
Good luck.
get some traps not the big mouse trap ones but i think they are called fenn traps that is what we use we caught 13 in a week last year when we had them the council charge here to come out
we have three outside cats but the rats are nearly as big as the cats
i know this suggestion will be slated but a sure fire way to get rid quickly is to put some lime down on the run they use, they will always go the same route. usually staying close to walls, fences etc, once the lime is on them they will clean themselves and therefore ingest poison, not nice, but some farmers use this method. I would put some good quality traps down or call in a pest control officer, your local council will advise you or may even do the job for you. good luck, Ray

Thanks guys!
We did have a cat but he passed away recently, and my dads worriead that the other local cats will get poisoned from eating the bodies.
I will suggested the lime trick, they have been using an old drain hole to burrow through so he could stick some in there.
I shall pass on your advice.
I must go the birds are banging on the window wanting breakfast!
suggest hat you call the council - they have pest control.
and good luck
Just a warning, if you do use poison and one of them dies under the floor the smell is absolutly revolting. As somebody has already suggest borrow a cat or perhaps a jack russel
and if you use lime, and any local cats are passing, they too will get the poison on them and clean themselves
Of course as mandimoo rightly points out, I would never put lime down if you have local cats, I was assuming it was in a really remote area without any cats. so if you do have cats around please just use traps or call in the experts.
If you iknow of anyone with a ferrett that will certainly get rid of rats
