Hello

I bought a Dogue De Bordeaux Bitch recently and took her for a check up at the local vets. Cost me 55 pound just for consultation and worming tablets. But I could be paying a hell of a lot more.....I have tried contacting the previous owners but no reply as to were the vets she had is based.
We need proof that she is upto date with all her jabs. She is three in January and if I get no proof I will be paying three years worth of jabs for her all over again. One thing the owner did say was that she was I.D chipped but they cant remember the number.....Could I get the vet to find this out and then maybe her address which could lead to her local vet info???

Thanks

Not sure where you get the idea you would need three years worth of jabs, all you would need is the full initial course which is two jabs, although you only really need a booster which is one jab, if you are sure she was done as a puppy.
Probably best to get the full course to be on the safe side.

The microchip number can be read by a vet or anyone with a scanner, although this will only give the number, and although the chip company will have the name and address of the previous owner it will not have any vet details.

It would be a good idea to get the microchip number transferred to your name and address though, in case she goes missing. The vet will put you in touch with which company she was chipped with.

Can you not check with any vets local to where you got her from, as they will have her chip number on her records and will probably have chipped her themselves.

Do you know her pedigree name? Her chip details might be on her KC registration document.

seems strange you were not given such information when you bought her? i would have made sure i had evidence of such before handing over my money!

I know...I have had previous questions on here regarding such, they wouldnt even hand over the KC reg documents...said because they didnt want n e one to breed her or sell her on...i fell for it, but then later learned she was spayed!
So, this is a lesson to learn from. The good thing is she has a fantastic temperament and is a lovely dog....which is just what i wanted anyway x
also im not sure the microchip will just take your word as authorisation to change name and address?? maybe someone on here can tell you?
I don't think the full course of jabs is very much more than the annual booster actually. It won't matter if you have the full course of jabs again even if she is up to date.

When a dog is microchipped, 2 of the cost of the chipping goes to Petlog, which is run by the Kennel Club. They keep a central database of all chip numbers and owners details.
If the details change you can pay to have them changed on the Petlog database.
This is the info from my microchip company, in the case of a dog passed to you without the details:

"Our new animal was given to us but we do not have his Petlog certificate. How can we change the Petlog database to reflect our details without the original Petlog certificate?

Contact Petlog directly on 0870 6066 751 to discuss the options. They will enter a note on their database so that if there is a dispute about ownership, they have a record of communications. Only a Court can decide who the animal belongs to. A microchip simply identifies the animal. Petlog do not have the authority to decide ownership. There is a small charge for changing the contact details on the Petlog database."

You will of course need the number, and if it turns out she is not already chipped then you can get her done. If you don't want to pay the vet again, then contact your local dog warden who will carry a scanner. Or a local dog rescue kennels, they will probably have one.
you know where the dog came from and i would hope, tjhe owners name at the very least so can you not call verts local to their and see if she was treated.

Did you get signed paperwork to say you had purchased the dog, if so you may be able to transfer the petlog details though i do think they have their own paperwork. Send any relevant forms to the previous owner for signing if needs be.

OK - just a thought - if you do get her scanned and it turns out she has a microchip and the previous owner (from the microchip) says she has been stolen/lost what would you do?

To be honest it all seems more than a bit dodgy to me. Why did they not know that she had been spayed? They couldn't remember the number? Where was the paperwork with the number on?

If you dig too deep you might not like what you find.

I cannot imagine someone using the dog for breeding then getting it spayed before rehoming/selling it. Caring breeders would insist the dog came back to them if the home was not suitable/could not care for it any more. Uncaring puppy farms would not bother to get the dog spayed before rehoming/dumping.

I would really consider if it turns out she has been stolen what you would do?
I seem to remember we warned you about this dodgy transaction when you said you were getting her. I hope you did get something signed as a receipt for your money, but as kita says, it is possible she was stolen. I would get the microchip number if she is done and get your name and address put on file asap or else they could even claim you stole her and ask for her back.
